WELCOME
Welcome to the project  MINERALS AROUND THE WORLD
Hosted by Ms. Coromoto López Rocha and Mr. Jorge Alberto Aguirre Reyes

The Minerals around the World Project encourages the development of reading, speaking and writing skills while integrating technology and collaboration into the classroom and among students from different countries. Using minerals as a vehicle and countries around the world, students exchange written descriptions via blogger, and will travel around the continents to find where those minerals are found.  During the project, students create, discuss, describe, interpret, analyze, organize and assess their minerals as well as the countries where they can find each of them.

Activity title: Minerals around the World.

Brief description of the collaborative activity:
MINERALS AROUND THE WORLD

CHEMISTRY (in Spanish) AND GEOGRAPHY(in English)
Prepare a list of minerals for studying in the classroom,  slides with photos of mineral, characteristics in details of the minerals,  ( written in English and Spanish), slides with information and photos where you can find each mineral around the world, description and information of the country where those minerals are found. Presentations in groups divided in the numbers of 6 continents and grouped the minerals in each continent. How each mineral is exploited or overexploited in the continent and country it is found. Prepare an Imovie (a film) per group. By scheduling and using Skype ( video conference) students will show their works and will share their final projects in the blog that teacher’s have prepared in advance:
https://globalcollaborationlessons.blogspot.com.es/

Teachers involved: Ms. Coromoto López Rocha and Mr. Jorge Alberto Aguirre Reyes

Description of the classes and students involved:
In Spain: 7th level(1st ESO in Spain)14th years old students, in a bilingual school, Geography ( in
English) subject.
In Colombia: 10th level, 16th years old students, in a Spanish school, Chemistry subject.

Duration: a month ( 3 sessions per week) connection among students as a group by Skype, once per
week.

Objectives:
1. Shared knowledge among teachers and students about minerals around the world, countries where
those minerals are found, and continents.
2. Teachers help students listen to diverse opinions, support knowledge claims with evidence, engage in critical and creative thinking, and participate in open and meaningful dialogue.
3. Teacher helps students connect new information to their experiences and to learning in other areas, helps students figure out what to do when they are stumped, and helps them learn how to learn.
4. Creation of a Blog and a Diary of Sessions for the personal portfolio of the students.

Tools teachers will use to plan the collaboration:
Padlet, Gmail, messenger, Skype.

MINERALS AROUND THE WORLD

CHEMISTRY AND GEOGRAPHY

Prepare a list of minerals for studying in the classroom,  slides with photos of mineral, characteristics in details of the minerals,  ( written in English and Spanish), where you can find each mineral around the world, description of the country where those minerals are found. Presentations in groups divided in the numbers of 6 continents and grouped the minerals in each continent. How each mineral is exploited or overexploited in the continent and country it is found.
The key ideas to have in mind in this challenge are:
    • Students need to learn how to use technology to work effectively on and carry out team tasks.
    • Teachers need to provide their students with opportunities to connect with peers worldwide and help them develop skills, such as cultural sensitivity and acceptance of other cultures and traditions.
    • Students can connect with students in other classes through blogging.
    • Teachers can coordinate with other teachers to set-up video conferences between classes.
    • The curriculum needs to offer students the opportunity to collaborate on a global project using cloud tools.
Global-collaboration projects that connect classrooms across schools and countries are a great way to bring this up.

Synchronous communication involves real-time communication. You will need to schedule a time zone friendly date and time to meet.

The following are free web tools to help us schedule our planning sessions and meetings:
Doodle
Create polls with suggested meeting times and dates and invite participants to select their preferences. Participants don’t need the app or an account to select their preferences. Syncs with your calendar.

Padle
Students can add sticky notes with links, video, pdfs, or audio. Choose
backgrounds or upload your own, password protect, and get an automatic QR code for your wall. Only the teacher has to register for a free account.

Stoodle
An online collaborative whiteboard tool, which includes audio tools for easier
collaboration. Features include drawing, coloring, adding text, and uploading files. No registration required.

One of the easiest ways to connect with other schools is with Skype, a video conferencing tool available on the web, own
browser, and as a mobile app.

Blogging is one way to get your students to have ongoing communication with peers worldwide. They can post their thoughts, images, videos, and their creations about various topics. Students in other countries will be able to leave comments at a time convenient to them.

The activity we  plan with another teacher/teachers should focus on getting students to collaborate with peers at a different school.
